Hybrid vehicles function in a different way compared to conventional powertrains. The
internal combustion engine operates intermittently and switches to electric power at low speeds to drive the vehicle
drive the vehicle. When operating in urban traffic, the combustion engine may only be in use for short periods before switching back
to electric power, so the combustion engine operates at a lower temperature
compared to non-hybrid.
Incredibly, some hybrid engines can shut down 500,000* times during their lifetime, switch
to electric and restart - that's 10 times more than a non-hybrid configuration.
These lower temperatures and many more restarts create more pollution because without the extra heat
of the engine, condensation and other contaminants remain in the oil.
All these hybrid challenges make it harder for the oil to protect against harmful engine wear.
